Progressivism

Here are the four primary goals of progressivism. Describe each of the goals and give a specific accomplishment of each.

Check out this photo gallery of child labor during the late 1800's early 1900's.

Do you think these ideas are still relevant today?

#1. Democracy- wanted to make the U.S government more responsive to the direct voice of the american people so they insituted insitutional reforms. The reforms were: Initive, Referendum, recall, secret ballot, direct primary, direct election of U.S senators, and womens suffrage. The progressives accomplished success in the effort to make the government more democratic.

#2. Efficiency- Wanted to make american government able to serve people needs better by making governmental operations and services more efficient. They accomplished giving more power to professional administrators, and giving less power to elected individuals. This reduced the voice of people in government.

#3. Regulations of large coroporations and monopolies- To regulate large coroporations that they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. The laissez and socialist approches became less popular than the trust busting and regulatory approaches to the progressives.

#4. Social Justice- Private and governmental action to help people in need. Progressives claimed that the consumption of alcohol limited the potential for advancemets.Progressives achieved success in this area with the enactment of the 18th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1919.

Child Labor

I do not think these ideas are still relevant today. I think this because now you have to be a certain age to work. Children especially are not allowed to work in factories. One job I could see children doing today like the children in the late 1800's and the early 1900's did is the job of newsies.

The triangle factory fire

It was a fire at the triangle waist company in New York city. The fire killed 146 young immigrant workers. It highlights the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers were subjected.

4 Goals of Progressivism:

#1 Democray: Many progressives wanted to make the U.S. government more responsive to the direct vote of the American people. The progressives introduced things such as the recall, referendum, women’s suffrage and the secret ballot to make the government more democratic. One accomplishment of this goal was the direct election of senators by the people. Previously senators were chosen by the state legislators and progressives wanted to change this so the people elected the senators for their state. Direct election of senators was achieved by the addition of the 17th Amendment.

#2 Efficiency: The progressives wanted to make American Government better able to serve the people’s needs by changing government operations and services so they would be more efficient and rational. This goal was seen in the progressive movements to eliminate governmental corruption. Corruption showed the waste and inefficiency in government Many progressives worked to eliminate governmental corruption by eliminating the power of machine politicians and urban political bosses. Power was taken from urban bosses and given to professional administrators.

#3 Regulation of large corporations and monopolies: The progressives hoped that by regulating large, corrupt corporations, that they could free human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. However, many progressives disagreed on how this goal should be approached. One accomplishment of this goal was known as trust-busting. Some progressives thought this was the best way to approach the problem because it broke up monopolies into smaller companies. This restored the idea of competition.

#4 Social Justice: Many progressives saw the urgency to help those in need. They therefore supported both private and governmental action to help needy people. One successful social justice reform was the building of Settlement Houses. These were community centers, located in the inner city slums, run by social workers and volunteers. The purpose of the settlement houses was to raise the standard of living of poor, urban, people by providing schools, day care centers, and cultural enrichment programs.

Pictures of Laboring Children:
The idea of children working at a young age is no longer relevant in America. A young child working in a factory all day in not only culturally unacceptable, but it is illegal. The progressives also thought it was unhealthy for young children to do hard labor in dirty factories so they worked to pass the Keating Owen Act of 1916. This prohibited the sale in interstate commerce goods manufactured by children. The ideas of the progressive era are seen today in the fact that children can not work until a certain age. Also, teenagers who are old enough to work can only work a certain number of hours.

The Triangle Factory Fire: On Saturday afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waist Company. 146 immigrant workers lost their lives in the fire. Many people died leaping from high windows trying to escape the fire. This fire illuminated the inhuman conditions that many workers had to toil in and influenced labor reforms afterward.

Four Goals of Progressivism

1-Democracy
Hoped to get the government to respond in a better way than it had been to the American public. Instituted reforms such as Initiative, Referendum, Secret Ballot, Direct primary, Direct election of U.S. Senators, and
Women's Suffrage in order to make the government more democratic.

2-Efficiency
Progressives hoped to make governmental operations and services more efficient and rational. They thought governments would function better if they were placed under the direction of elite, professional administrators. They sought to make governments more rational through the centralization of the decision-making process, they also worked to cleanup local governments by having movements to eliminate governmental corruption.

3-Regulations of Large Corporations and Monopolies
Progressives hoped that regulating large corporations would liberate human energies from restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism.
They diagreed whether Laissez-Faire, Trust-busting, Regulation, or Socialism should be used.

4-Social Justice
They supported both private and governmental action to help people in need. Reforms such as the development of professional social workers, the building of Settlement Houses, the enactment of child labor laws, support for the goals of organized labor and prohibition laws helped cure social injustice.

-The Triangle Factory Fire
On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building of the Triangle Waist Company. By the time the fire was over, 146 of the 500 employees had died. This incident is significant because it highlights the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers can be subjected.

Four Primary Goals of Progressivism:

1. Democracy: Progressives wanted the United States government to be more responsive to the public than it had been. The progressives introduced reforms such as referendum, direct primary, and direct election of U.S senators. The progressives succeeded in making the government more democratic.

2. Efficiency: Progressives wanted the U.S government to be more capable to serve people's needs better by altering governmental operations and services to be more efficient. They also worked to clean the local governments from corruption.

3. Regulation of Large Corporations and Monopolies: Progressives wanted to regulate large and corrupt corporations to free human energies from restrictions forced by industrial capitalism. Many progressives disagreed on how this should be accomplished. The trust-busting and regulatory approaches seemed to be favored by most.

4. Social Justice: Progressives wanted private and governmental actions to assist those people in need. Reforms such as the building of Settlement Houses, the enactment of child labor laws, and support for the goals of organized labor were formed. Success came with the enactment of the 18th amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1919.

Child Labor Photos: Children working at such young ages is no longer relevant in the U.S. It is no longer legal for children to work in such an unhealthy environments. Today teenagers are allowed to work, but for only a minimum amount of time.

The Triangle Factory Fire: On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building of the Triangle Waist Company. The fire killed 146 immigrant workers. This fire showed the conditions workers had to work in for hours a day. This later led to reforms.

4 Goals of Progressivism:

#1 Democray: Many progressives wanted to make the U.S. government more responsive to the direct vote of the American people. The progressives introduced things such as the recall, referendum, women’s suffrage and the secret ballot to make the government more democratic. One accomplishment the progressives made by direct democracy was the election of senetors. Before progressives, senetors were elected by the state legislature. Because of the 17th ammendment imposed by the progressives, we now have a say in who becomes our senetor.

#2 Efficiency: The progressives wanted to make American Government better able to serve the people’s needs by changing government operations and services so they would be more efficient and rational. This goal was seen in the progressive movements to eliminate governmental corruption. Corruption showed the waste and inefficiency in government. Instead of hiring qualified people for government jobs, the political bosses would hire people from their family or ethnicity, which greatly slowed down the efficiency of the government. Many progressives worked to eliminate governmental corruption by eliminating the power of machine politicians and urban political bosses. Because of the progressives work, power was taken from urban bosses and given to professional administrators.

#3 Regulation of large corporations and monopolies: The progressives hoped that by regulating large, corrupt corporations, that they could free human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. However, many progressives disagreed on how this goal should be approached. One accomplishment of this goal was known as trust-busting, the idea that breaking up big businesses into smaller companies is the best way to restore competition and keep prices down.
#4 Social Justice: Many progressives saw the urgency to help those in need. So, they supported both private and governmental action to help people in need. One successful social justice reform was the building of Settlement Houses. These were community centers, located in the inner city slums, run by social workers and volunteers. Before now, the quality of life for poor people was unbelievable; they had now schooling and rundown homes – they basically lived to work (because they had to work to live).

This prohibited the sale in interstate commerce goods manufactured by children (but apparently only from our country because it’s still legal to purchase items from different countries made in a sweat shop). The ideas of the progressive era are seen today in the fact that children can not work until a certain age. Another restriction is that teenagers who are old enough to work can only work a certain number of hours.

This fire illustrated the terrible conditions that many workers had to toil with. This event influenced labor reforms to legally change working conditions.

#1. Democracy-hoped to make the U.S. government pay more attention to the American people's opinions and their say about government issues. They did this by instituting reforms such as the Initiative, Referendum, Recall, Secret Ballot, Direct Primary, Direct election of U.S. Senators, and the Women Suffrage. The progressive did achieve their greatest and most enduring successes in the effort to make government more democratic.

Efficiency-They also hoped to make American government better able to serve the needs of the people by making governmental operations and services more efficient and rational. Referums included: Elite professional administrators, centralization, of decision, making process, and movements to eliminate governmental corruption.

Regulation of large Corporation and Monopolies- Many progressives hoped that by regulating large corporation that they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. They argued over these 4 solutions should be used to regulate corporations: Laissez-faire, Trust-busting, Regulation, and Socialism. The Laissez-faire and socialist approaches weren't as popular among progressive than the trust-busting and regulatory approaches.

Social Justice- Many progressives supported both private and governmental action to help people in need. There were social justice reforms included Development of professional social workers, the building of settlement Houses, the enactment of child labor laws, support for the goals of organized labor and prohibition laws.

THE FOUR GOALS OF PROGRESSIVISM

1. Democracy is the first of the primary goals of the Progressive movement. They hoped to make the government in the U.S. more responsive to the direct voice of the American people by instituting certain reforms. These reforms are initiative, referendum, recall, sectret ballot, direct primary, direct election of U.S. Senators, and Women's Suffrage. The progessive party accomplished success in the effort to make the government more democratic.

2. Efficiency is the second primary goal of the Progressive movement. They hoped to make American government better able to serve the people's need by making governmental operations and services more efficient and rational. The reforms included elite, professional administrators, centralization of decision-making process, and movements to eliminate governmental operations. This however contradicted democray by placing power in the hands of administrators and distanced the people from the government, however it did create efficiency.

3. Regulation of large corporations and monopolies is the third primary goal of the Progressive movement. The Progressives hoped they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. They disagreed over these solutions: Laissez-Faire, trust-busting, regulation, and socialism. They accomplished some regulation of large corporations and some workers and union rights.

4. Social justice is the fourth primary goal of the Progressive movement. The progressives supported both private and governmental action to help people in need. They used reforms such as, development of professional social workers, the building of settlement houses, the enactment of child labor laws, support for goals of organized labor, and prohibition laws. They achieved success in the enactment of teh Eighteenth Ammendment which prohibited the consumption of alcohol.

CHILD LABOR

Child labor is not relevent in America today. It is looked down upon and there are laws against it. After the period that America went through during the Insutrial Revolution children are gretaly protected from being worked to death or treated unfairly. For example, the spanking of children by their own parents is on the verge of being illegal, so how could a child working overtime even by thought of. No, times have changed and children these dyas are expected to go to school, and in many cases even discouraged to work.

TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE

On Saturday afternoon, March 11, 1911 near closing time a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waist Company. The fire was so bad that some victims leaped from the windows only to be smashed on the concrete pavement of the streets below. It claimed the lives of 146 young immigrant workers. It was one of the worst disasters of the Industrial Revolution and highlights the inhumane working conditions that the people were forced to work in.

Progressivism had four main goals. They included democracy, social justice, efficiency, and regulation of large corporations and monopolies. Democray was to make the vioces of American people be heard by US government. Social justice was used to make help people in need, and efficiency was designed to make American government better serve the people's needs by making govermental operations and services run more efficient and rational. While regulation of large corporations and monopolies was to regulate large corps and monopolies so they wouldn't over shadow small businesses. In my opinion democracy, social justice and regulation of large corps and monopolies were the most effective. I think these ideas aren't still relevent today in a way because things now aren't like they were in the past. We now have schools, and child labor laws and all that other stuff so we really don't need progressivism anymore. However, I do feel that without these 3 effective ideas that ever being that the world be definately be something different and not in a good way.

"Progressivism" was a newly introduced theme in the late 1800s and earyl 1900s. There were four main goals of progressivism: DEMOCRACY,which wanted the American government to make more affirmative action for the peoples vote. The democracy section introduced reforms such as recall, secret ballot, direct primary and womens suffrage.EFFICIENCY was the ability to make jobs and opportunities more efficient. Also power was given to pprofessional administrators instead of elected individuals. This would help in spreading the power. REGULATIONS OF LARGE CORPORATIONS AND MONOPOLIES,
Progressives hoped that regulating large corporations would liberate human energies from restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. Also, SOCIAL JUSTICE, was the goal of having the government help those that were in a economic struggle.Settlement houses were made and social building were there to help people.

The 4 goals of Progressivism:

#1.Democracy: Progressives wanted Initiative, Referendum, Recall, Secret Ballot, Direct primary, Direct election of US senators, and women's suffrage. Mostly they wanted to vote for people directly rather than non-directly. Also Women wanted the right to vote.

#2.Efficiency: Progressives wanted Elite, professional administrators, centralization of the decision making process, and movements to eliminate governmental corruption. They wanted more elite, trained people to run the government more smoothly. They thought it would be more rational to have a centralized decision making process. Corruption was bad, and they sought to get rid of it within the government.

#3.Regulation of Large Corporations and Monopolies: Progressives hoped that by regulating large corporations, they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. They disagreed with Laissez-Faire, Trust-busting, Regulation, and Socialism. Some socialists were even put to death.

#4.Social Justice: Some Progressive social reforms included: development of professional social workers, the building of Settlement Houses, the enactment of child labor laws, support for the goals of organized labor, and prohibition laws. child labor was a major problem that was later solved by progressive child labor laws.

Child Labor: Of course these ideas are still relevant today. Maybe not In America, but there are sweat shops in China and Indonesia where children are working 12 hour days without any rest or food or breaks. Child labor is wrong, and America realized that, but other countries have not.

The Triangle Factory Fire: A fire broke out at the Triangle Waist Company in New York because of inhumane working conditions in which industrial workers were subjected to. 146 Immigrant workers died because of the fire. Its part of the reason there became an International Labor movement.

1. The progressive wanted to make the voting process a direct vote from the american people. they wanted the common man to be more involved with the government( things like recall, referendum, women's suffrage) so it could be a more democratic system.

2. they wanted to get rid of the corruption in govermnment by giving power to other people than elected officails.

3. they wanted to control corporations and monopolies, but how they were going to do it was the prob;em between many progressives.

4. They wanted to help the poor amd new immigrants.

child labor

I don't think this is relevant today. there are so many child labor laws and harsh punishmnets for companies.

fire

3. Regulation
Progressive want to regulate large corporations and monopolies to reduce their power.
4. Justice
Support both private and governmental action to help people, include: development of professional workers, prevent overwork of children, support for the organized labor.

Child labor:

Even though I came to America not so long relatively. From what I see, the ideas of force children work at immature age are not relevant today anymore. Today, laws protected the child labor. They only allowed to work at certain age and under certain hours.

4 GOALS
~Democracy
Progressivists wanted democracy in the U.S. government. They wanted the government to be more lead by the people’s vote, a direct vote. The progressivists also started certain recalls, woman’s suffrage and a secret ballet to make the U.S. more of a democracy. One specific accomplishment of the goal of democracy includes the elections of the senators through this direct election thing achieved through the seventeenth amendment.
~Efficiency
The progressivists wanted to make the U.S. government more efficient. That is to make better use of their time and production. They wanted the government to serve the needs of people by adding different operations and services in order to become more efficient and less corrupt. The specific accomplishment here is the removal the power of the urban bosses that was then given to the professional administrators.
~Regulation of large corporations and monopolies
Progressivists wanted to regulate large and corrupt corporations in order to free human energy from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. One of the main things of this goal was that a lot of the progressivists couldn’t agree on how to solve or accomplish this goal. One of the direct accomplishments includes trust-busting which breaks up monopolies into smaller businesses and companies and allowed for non corruptness with competition.
~Social Justice
Progressivists were all about helping those who needed help or who were not as fortunate as everyone else. They supported any help anyone gave to those in need. One accomplishment of this goal included the building of community centers in the inner city supporting the poor and the needy. This supported education, child care, and cultural advances programs in order to help the less fortunate get back on their feet.
Pictures of Laboring Children
I believe that the children working at the super young age isn’t extremely overpowering in America. I think that we just put factories elsewhere in the world and treat other nationalities of children as bad as they were treated in America then. We now have laws here against child labor and how that child can only work x amount of hours a week and you just don’t really see that in America anymore. The progressivists agreed that it was unhealthy and unsafe for children to work so long and hard helping America get to were it is today. So I think that these ideas are still relevant just not necessarily in America.
The Triangle Factory Fire:
On March of 1911, a fire started in the Asch building of the Triangle Waist Company. It was here where one hundred forty six immigrants who came to America to work had died as a result of this fire. There were people jumping from windows hoping to survive a jump rather than burn…sort of like the fire on nine-eleven. This fire got rid of the horrible conditions that several workers had previously worked in and also helped trigger certain labor reforms in later times following the fire.

I think that in some ways Progressivism was bad.
I think that not all of the city managers were the cause of the bad government. The people of the government also have a part in the government, so whatever triggered the problems in the government could have been by the people and not just the manager.
However, in another point of view, some managers could have been the cause in some cases.
Most Progressives just wanted to keep the government democratic. So perhaps that is why they wanted better management in the government; such as managers that are well train and professionals who knew what they are dealing with.
In my opinion, Progressivism was a good cause that occured. It brought social justice to the government. Likewise, the working/job industries, the fact that they were able to prevent CHILDREN from overwork (Child Labor Laws) and providing them with more education & better life.
If not for this, there would still be many workers in the job industries with inapropriate ages and lack of education.

Democracy: Progressives wanted to incorporate the views of the American people into government. They used reforms such as recalls, referendum, initiative, secret ballots, and direct election. Making the government more democratic was the progressives greatest success.
Efficiency: Preogressives wanted to make the government easy to serve the needs of the people. Reforms included the power of professional administrators and the elimination of governmental corruption. This went hand in hand with their democratic views.
Regulations of large coroporations and monopolies:Progressives wanted to liberate the people from the chokehold of industrial capitalism.
Popular approaches to this were trust-busting and regulation. Trust busting allowed smaller companies to regulate the economy.
Social Justice: Progressives wanted to help the people in need. They did so by the use of social workers, settlement houses, and child labor laws. A success story of a settlement house was the Hull house founded by Jane Adams in Chicago.
Child labor is now looked down upon in America mainly because it is against the law and it is unhealthy. Kids are supposed to be in school learning, then after that they can go work in the mines and factories.
The Triangle Factory Fire: It all started near closing time on Saturday afternoon, March 25, 1911, when a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waist Company. It was an awful fire where 146 of the workers died, most of them women.

The Progressivism movement had four primary goals.
#1 Democracy- The progressives wanted a more direct democracy. They had to make reforms to achieve this, those reforms were: Initiative, Referendum, Recall, Secret Ballot, Direct Primary, Direct Election of Senators, adn Wwomen's Suffrage. They achieved the greatest goal when women were allowed to vote with the 19th ammendment.
#2 Efficiency- The progressives hoped that by making companies more efficeint, the government could serve their needs better. They hoped to do this by putting trained people in charge, centralizing the decision making, and lessing the government corruption.
#3 Regulation of large corporatios and monopolies- Progressives thought they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism through regulating large corporations. The way to regulate was debatable between the progressives, but they were able to get competition between corporations back.
#4 Social Justice- Progressives wanted to help those in need. They did this by developing social workers and settlement houses, enacting child labor laws, and supporting organized labor. Their greatest acheivemnet was the child labor laws which lessened the work load of children.

Child Labor- These ideas are no longer in use today because its now a requirement that children go to school til the age of 16. Also, there are restrictions on the age when people can start working. The main goal now for children is not to work them, but to educate them so they can achieve more throughout life.

The Triangle Factory Fire- A fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waist Company on March 25, 1911. This fire was a great disaster and it highlighted the inhumane working conditions to which industrial workers can be subjected. The lives of 143 of 500 immigrant workers were lost.

When you think about how America is today, we can all thank the reformers in the progressive movement. Even though in my opinion i thought that it wasn't just all the governments fault. In a way the people could have been a part of the destruction that went on in the early twentieth century.
Not that i don't appreciate what i have now but living in the 21 century you can say that not everyone is perfect and most things are caused by people. However their four main issue they wanted to slove was actually good when i think about it now they did a really good job!!!!

III. Regulation of Large Corporations and Monopolies
Progressives wanted regulate large corporations that they could liberate human energies from the restrictions imposed by industrial capitalism. The progressives are against Laissez-Faire, Trust-busting, Regulation, and Socialism.

VI. Social Justice
Progressives supported private and governmental action to help people needs. Justices has Development of professional social workers, The building of Settlement Houses, The enactment of child labor laws, Support for the goals of organized labor, and Prohibition laws. Which was also involved in the 18th amendment, which they did succeed.

Child Labor
I don't think these ideas are still relevant in the United State today. We have laws against child abuse and child labors, so I don't think it exist anymore. However, I think in other country, it does still exist. Like in poor places like Laos, where the kids are force to do all these work so could get food and make money. At some circumstances it don't exist anymore, but at some circumstance it still does.

The Triangle Factory
In New York on a Saturday, a fire broke out. It was in March 25, 1911. After the end of this huge fire, it has killed 146 people out of 500 people.

DEFINENTLY READ THIS THOUGHROUGHLY FONS BECAUSE THIS IS VERY INTELECTUALLY GANGSTER. DO NOT DISREGARD.
1.democracy:As the progressivism spirits aroused, these tried to creat a government that would be MORE democratic, or in other words one that would directlly involve the masses (which are asses) through voting. Reforms included referendum, secret ballot, and women suffrage. Today due to this progress we now directly vote for our senators(although not the president).

2.Efficiency:Because the masses were becoming a huge concern for these progressives, better governments had to be established to meet the peoples needs; efficient government operations. One main goal was the translation of political power from urban bosses to professional administrators. As a result the peoples voices have been reduced.

3.Regulation of large corporations and monopolies: In regulating these large corporations and avoiding monopolies, there could be more variety in human energies opposed from the restrictions embedded by these industrial powers. These included trust-busting as a major result and a Citgo, Speedway, Texaco and Mobile compete to see who can catch my attention with the lowest price of gas to fill up my 3.2 gallon motor scooter.

4.Social justice: because the progressives supported the masses, they supported many of the private and public organizations that aided them. The enactment of child labor laws was a big issue for the progressives and as a result I don't have to work more than 40 hours a week(forcedly) because the law says so.

Child labor: I don't believe that these ideas are still relevant today because the children of these days now take their young lives for granted as well as being lazy bums that just eat, sleep and s$%&; furthermore they use the excuse of them working a bit to be illegal. American customs(culture) encourages these practices by making it normal and not frowning upon this.

The triangle Fire: was a eye-opener for the world to aknowledge and understand the gruesome conditions that the factory worker had to unbearably work under. In this fire that broke out on March 25, 1911, 146 immigrant workers died either trapped by the fire or attempting to escape it.

#1Democracy
Hoped to get the government to respond in a better way than it had been to the American public. Instituted reforms such as Initiative, Referendum, Secret Ballot, Direct primary, Direct election of U.S. Senators, and
Women's Suffrage in order to make the government more democratic.
#3 Regulation of Large Corporations and Monopolies: Progressives wanted to regulate large and corrupt corporations to free human energies from restrictions forced by industrial capitalism. Many progressives disagreed on how this should be accomplished. The trust-busting and regulatory approaches seemed to be favored by most.
#4Social justice- They wanted to help the poor amd new immigrants.

Child labor:
From what I see, the ideas of force children work at immature age are not relevant today. Today, laws protected the child labor. They only allowed to work at certain age and under certain hours

The Triangle Factory Fire
On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building of the Triangle Waist Company. By the time the fire was over, 146 of the 500 employees had died. This incident is significant because it highlights the inhumane working conditions that the workers had to work in.

4 GOALS OF PROGRESSIVISM:

#1 DEMOCRACY: A vast amount of progressives wanted to make the US government more responsive to direct vote from American people. This brought the recall, referendum, and women's suffrage.

#2 EFFICIENCY: The progressives thought that the American government could be modified in order to better serve the American people. They thought that this would eliminate governmental corruption.

#3 REGULATIONS OF LARGE CORPORATIONS AND MONOPOLIES: Progressives were aware of the corruption going on in large corporations, and thought that they could free human energies from their restrictions. Unfortunately, progressives could not agree on a course of action. One of their successes though was trust-busting.

#4 SOCIAL JUSTICE: Progressives saw those in need and wanted to help. They supported both governmental and private action to do so. One way they went about helping people was by building Settlement Houses that were community centers that were run by social workers and volunteers. These were used to raise the standards of living for those in need.

CHILD LABOR:
This idea is no longer relevant in America. We have certain laws that allow people no younger than 14 to be hired and even when they are hired they have a maximum number of hours that they can work in a week.

THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE: A fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waste Company. 146 people were killed in the building and many others died jumping out of it.

1. Democracy wanted to make the U.S goveronment pay more attention to the peoples opinions, and listen to what they had to say about goveronment problems.
It was done by making reforms. The progressive did achieve their greatest and most enduring successes in the effort to make government more democratic.
2.Through efficiency progressives wanted lite, professional administrators, centralization of the decision making process, and movements to eliminate governmental corruption. They wanted more elite, trained people to run the government more smoothly. They thought it would be more rational to have a centralized decision making process. Corruption was bad, and they sought to get rid of it within the government.
3. Progressive want to regulate large corporations and monopolies to reduce their power.
4. Justice wanted to
Support both private and governmental action to help people, including development of professional workers, prevent children from being overworked and support to organize child labor.

Child labor
I think child labor doesn't exist today. When yiou have a job there are alot of circumstances you have to follow.

The Progressivist's 4 Goals:

1. Democracy- the Progressivists wanted to make the American democratic system work as a more acurate voice of the people. They pushed for and achieved reforms such as direct election of U.S. senators and the right for women to vote.

2. Efficiency- They wanted to make the government serve the people better, and made reforms to move decision making power away from elected officials and more towards professional administrators.

3. Regulation of Large Coroporations- the progressivists wanted large monopolizing corporations to be regulated by the government and accomplished this by seeing large trust busts of powerfull companies.

4. Social Justice- Progressivists saw the need for a raise in the standard living conditions for Americans, especialy those who lived in the inner city slums. This is where they had another one of their reforms, the Settlement Houses, which served as community daycare and education centers.

Child Labor- Since the atrocities of child labor were exposed in the early 1900's, laws in this country have been passed outlawing the forced and unfair labor of children, along with a minimum working age and restricted working hours for minors. Unfortunatly, this has not happened yet in some parts of the world, where young children are still forced to work for hours a day in sweat shops while making next to nothing.

The Triangle Factory Fire- On Saturday afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the triangle factory in New York, killing 146 young workers. This event prompted investigations into fire code regulations and workers rights.

Sam "KELLS" Keller, Jr.
Progressivism was not so much an organized movement as it was a general spirit of reform embraced by Americans with diverse goals and backgrounds during the early the 1900-1920s.

1.Democracy:Progressives hoped to make government in the U.S. government responsive to the voice of the American people by institutional reform; Initiative, Referendum, Recall, Secret Ballot, Direct primary, Direct election of U.S. Senators, and Women Suffrage

2.Efficiency:Progressives wanted to make american governments better able to serve teh people's needs by making the governmental services more rational using three reforms;Elite, professional administrators, centalization of decision-making process, movements to eliminate governmental corruption.

3.Regulation of Large Corporation and Monopolies:Progressives wanted to regulating large corporation that could liberate human energies by the restrictions by the industrial capitalism. They disagreed on four solutions; Laissez-Faire, Trust-busting, Regulation, and Socialism

4.Social:Progrssive to the side of private and governmental action to help people in need, Social justice reforms includes:Developmentof professional social workers, the building of settlement houses, the enactment of child labor laws, Support for the goals of organized labor, and the prohibition laws.

Child Labor: Is doesn't exist in america but it does exist in sweat shops that produce clothing. In america you have to go through alot to get a workers permit and you can start working at a certain age.

TheTriangle Factory Fire
On 3/25/1911, a fire broke out on the top floors of the Asch Building in the Triangle Waist Company. 146 immigrants workers lost their lives in the Triangle Factory fire. This showed conditions that the 500 workers ahd to go through

1] DEMOCRACY.
Progrssivists wanted the population of peoples to elect and be represeneted by those they choose directly. Reforms where placed to allow such directness; citzens can propose laws [initative], where population would vote on the laws [referendum], direct vote could remove office position [recall], secret ballets, direct promary, and so on. Overall, the goal to of Progressivism was to produce a more accurate account of democracy in the government and populated citizens.

2] EFFICIENCY.
To allow an improvement in the government, the party wanted a more effiecent way of organizing America. They saw three ways of doing so: Elites. Centralizing. and Movements to end corruption. The elites were designed to set guidelines, the centralization to be more rational, and the corruption to be elimated through various cleaning up techniques.Their effeincy goal was not neccessarly set up to watch for the direct democracy, but was still sought for in the party.

3] REGULATIONS OF POWER.
Four solutions to the over powering corperations and monopolies were placed, but not decided on which to act upon. The four; Laissez-Faire, Trust Busting, Regulations, and Socialism. The four solutions focused on breaking larger powers to smaller, shifting the wealth, controlling the marketplaces, and a shift in that of which controls the company.

4] SOCIAL JUSTICE.
The final focus of the party was social justice. This was the balancing of private and govermental action to help the needy population. Organized labor and social workers were called for, to improve the middle and low classes work foreces and to help the poverty stricken population. Child labor laws were also needed, to help improve child youth and protect the youngsters. The other wants were prohibition of alcohol and the building settlements for people who needed education, housing, and food. Social justice was the fourth goal wanted by the progressivist party.

Relavent Child Labor Photos:
NO! I mean look at those kids, full of soot and ash and all tired and worn out. Children these days are treated with respect, well in most places. I am sure you can find a couple of countries that still do this to their children, but most of the world today has come to embrace childhood and let kids be kids.

Triangle Fire Summary:
With industry at boom, a building strikes on fire, killing 146 workers. This tragic event lead to the reforms and mind changing conditions of the workers. Labor laws and unions emerged and began to take place over the dominanting, life threatning aspects of the average worker.

A.R.HOUR 6-7

#1.Democracy - Was created to give the American people a chance to participate in Goverment issue. The Reforms were as follows: Initive , Referendum , recall, secret ballot, direct primary, direct election of U.S. senators , and women suffrage.

#2.Efficiency- with the effort in making the American goverment better in serving the peoples needs by givin more power to professional administrators, and limited the power to elected individuals. This effect reduced the voice of people in goverment.

#3.Regulations of large coroporations and monopolies: the Progressives wanted to free the people from the grip of industrial capitalism.
the most common approaches to this were trust-busting and regulation. Trust busting allowed smaller companies to regulate the economy.

#4.Social Justice: Progressives wanted to help the people in need. They did so by the use of social workers, settlement houses, and child labor laws. A success story, the purpose of the settlement houses was to raise the standard of living of urbanites by providing schools, day care centers, and cultural enrichment programs for the people.

Child Labor

I dont think that child labor is relavent because there are laws now that protect children from those conditions. There are limits to what age you can work and to how long you can work for.

Hour 9-9

The four goals of progressivism

1. Democracy - The government should be more democratic. That means progressives tried to get the people rule their country more by themselves by giving them more direct voices. Therefore they had some, they successively achieved : Initiative (citizens prpose laws), Referendum (citizens vote on laws), Recall (citizens could remove official by voting), Secret ballot (voting secretly), Direct primary (members of parties nominate for public offices), direct elections of Senators (by citizens), Women's Suffrage.

2. Efficiency - Progressives wanted the government to better serve the people and their needs. Therefore they had following reforms, that sometimes came in conflict with their wish for more democracy: adminstrators should be trained and professional, numbers of offices were reduces to centralize the decision-making and avoid overlapping areas, power was given to professional administrators rather than to bosses to eliminate corruption.

3. Corporations and Monopolies - progressives wanted to regulate big corporations better but where not sure how to. There were four different opportunities: laissez-faire (so it regulates itself on the amrket), trustbusting (breaking up big monopolies to increase competition), regulating (let big companies exist but try to regulate them), socialism (government should have the power over large corporations and operate them for the public. Of these four ways trust-busting and regulating were more popular.

4.social Justice - Progressives thought people in need should be supported by private and governmental actions. They tried to reach this goal by reforms like professional social workers (welfare and charity work should be done by trained people),settlement houses (to raise the standard of living by providing schools, day care centers, and cultural enrichment programs), child labor laws (prevent overwork so that children could go to school and mature naturally), organized labot (safety, health, wages, unions), prohibiotion law (ban alcohol). Progressives achieved success in this area.

Child labor

I don't think they are still relevant in today's America but in Eastern Europe or Asia (especially in very poor countries) I'm sure child labor still exists. Kids have to work in very bad conditions and there is nochance right now to find all the people that hire children illegally. I'm not even sure if child labor is prohibited everywhere.

The Triangle Factory Fire

On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City. It claimed the lives of 146 young immigrant workers. Today it is one of the examples how bad working conditions were. After that improving had been done.

Hour 6-7

Democracy- Within the idea of Democracy, it's role in progressivism was to try and reduce power in the national government declaring direct vote by the people such as proposed laws, and the state senate. There were new establishments such as the secret ballot and women later gained the rights to vote.
Efficiency- By ensuring that efficiency occured during progressivism, progressives felt that the government should elect people who were fit or qualified for the job and were pushing for a more centralized government.
Regulation of Large Corporations and Monopolies- Progrssives wanted to split up the power amongst large monopolies at the time such as the Standard Oil Company. Many progressives felt like they, the workers, should own the coporations themselves because they saw the owners of these large corporations were unfair and living in a life a royalty in which most didn't deserve; some become greedy and some corrupt.
Social Justice- These reforms were created to adjust the social issues during Progressivism. Progressives wanted more organized labor for the workers such as equal or higher pay rates, better work conditions and it also included the rights of child labor like setting an age limit and the number of hours worked. They also wanted settlement homes which was in hopes of raising living standards at the time due to number of immigrants and their settlements.

Although in the U.S we were able to enforce ideas about not having child labor occur, we can't however, control it throughout the rest of the world; as much as we would like to change events like these that affect our daily living, we simply can't reverse what's been done. Child Labor has struck many parts of the world and do lead back to the United States a country in which is so against child labor; half of our manufactured goods come from sweat shops of those from East and Southeast Asia and even within the southern parts of the Americas.

Triangle Fire Factory- This was a story dealing with tragic work conditions that lead many worker's lives to a short life. Workers at the facotry endured unfair work's pay, long hours of labor, and unsafe working conditions. Due to the unsafe work conditions, a fire had broke out within the building and the 146 of 500 employees, weren't able to escape because many had no clue as to how.

Four Goals of progressivism:

democracy was created so that the american people could have a voice in thier government. new institutional reforms were created, such as secret ballot, womans sufferage, invite, referendum, recall, and direct election of the u.s. senators.

efficiency was to make the american government able to serve the needs of americans. they gave power to the proffesional administrators and less power to the elected individuals-- resulting in the loss of the peoples voice.

regulations were imposed onto the larger corporations and monopolies to better human energies.

progressives believed that in drinking alcohol limited the potential for advancements. the 18th amendment was created in favor of the progressives to the constitution in 1919.

i believe that the problem of child labor is still a problem today! in foreign countries there are many children who work many long hours and get paid very little and we as americans are ok with that as long as we can get our disigner clothing for outragious prices when it really cost nothing to make. i hope that all who are reading this is happy that their made in china tee shirt that they paid $30 for was worth it because there are children suffering for it!

4 goals of progressivism

1. Democracy- The progressives pushed for a more democratic government. The progressives instituted the introduction of initiative, referendum, recall, womens suffrage, direct primary, direct election of senators (before they were elected by state legislatures), and the secret ballot.

2. Efficiency- In an effort to make the government more efficient towards the people, the progressives tried to ward out the governmental corruption. They sought to banish political machines and transfer that power to professional administrators.

3. Regulations of large corporations and monopolies- The progressives didn't want any one company to control the entire market they work within. This would allow that company to jack prices, and take wealth over consumer happiness. They did this by "trust busting" or dividing up big corporations into many smaller ones.

4. Social Justice- The progressives wanted all to be fair within society. They did this by enacting child labor laws, prohibition of alcohol, and forming settlement houses.

Child Labor

Though not in the literal sense of a child working in a factory every day, child labor is still widely exploited. In families, when there is work to be done, do mom and dad do it all themselves? NO! They have the kids do it. Kids also get jobs at the age of 16 when they should be worrying about school and having fun in what remains of their childhood. Yes we have child labor laws, but only enough to keep people happy. It's the bare minimum of restricting child labor.

The Triangle Factory Fire

A large factory in the Triangle Waist Company caught fire on a March afternoon in 1911. Many people, specifically immigrant workers, burned to death in the already-sweltering factory. Also, many died by leaping from windows to escape the flames. This travesty accentuates the terrible and pernicious conditions in which the workers operated. This is exactly what the progressives were working to fix.

child labor:

the idea of child labor is not relevant in the US today. children are now sent to schools and are meant to get an education to help them in the future and not a factory job like in the late 1800s

the triangle factory fire:
it was a fire that broke out in the triangle waist company. many immigrants died in that fire; they were either burnt ir they jumped out of windows because they were locked in and could not get out. that showed the inhumane way in which those laborers were treated.
